What Are Seed Warts?

There are many different types of warts, all of which are caused by a virus (HPV). Most of us will get a wart at some point in our lives. Seed warts are more commonly known as Common warts or Plantar warts. These warts typically have a tiny black dot in the center that resembles a seed, hence the name seed warts. The black dot is a capillary vessel that carries blood to the wart. Seed warts (or Common warts) are hard, rough bumps that are usually round in shape and are raised above the skin. They usually appear on the hands and fingers and are flesh-colored. Seed warts are one of the biggest dermatological concerns, second only to acne. 75% of people will contract a wart during their lifetime. Seed warts are somewhat contagious and can be spread to other parts of the body by normal daily activity. Children and teens are more prone to contracting warts because their immune systems aren't yet fully developed. However, it's possible for a person of any age to get warts.

What Causes Seed Warts?

Seed warts are caused by the virus HPV (human papilloma virus) which enters the body through a break in the skin. Warts are normally spread through direct contact, but it is possible to contract the virus in places such as bathrooms, showers and locker rooms. Each persons body and immune system is different and will react differently when exposed to the HPV virus. Not everyone exposed to the virus will develop warts.

What Are the Symptoms of Seed Warts?

Seed warts are usually hard, rough bumps that are circular in shape and raised above the skins surface. They usually appear on the hands and fingers and are flesh-colored. Seed warts can also appear on other areas of the body such as the arms, legs, feet, and toes.

How Can I Prevent Seed Warts?

Good, consistent personal hygiene is the best place to start. Also, eating a balanced diet of food high in vitamins A, C and E will help strengthen the body's immune system. Try to avoid stress, which can weaken the immune system.

What Are the Treatments for Seed Warts?

Most doctors says that Seed warts will eventually disappear by themselves. 20% of all warts will disappear within six months and 60% disappear within two years. However, if you do not feel like waiting and/or your wart doesn't seem to be going away there are many over-the-counter, medical and alternative wart treatment options:
1. Over-the-counter treatments found in the local pharmacy

4. Cutting the wart off
5. Injecting medicine into the wart
