Children and Warts
Warts in children are abnormal skin cell growths caused by the Human Papilloma Virus or "HPV". As much as 16 percent of children will be affected by 11 years of age. While they are not a serious medical condition, warts in children can be bothersome because they can be painful when on the hands or feet. Also, warts can effect the child's appearance.
The wart virus is spread by direct contact from one child to another. New warts usually take about 4 weeks to develop once the child is exposed to the HPV virus. Exactly how the virus spreads is still a bit of a mystery but warts tend to develop when the skin is damaged. Children are active and have a tendency to get scratches and scrapes, exposing them to the wart virus.
Children who have warts are usually perfectly normal from a medical standpoint. Some children are more prone to developing warts just like some children are more prone to catching more colds. Whether a child is exposed to the wart virus and will acquire warts usually depends on the health of their immune system. A stronger immune system will be more apt to fight off the wart virus.
3 types of warts that generally occur in children.
Common WartsCommon warts are flesh-colored, raised, rough bumps that are usually found on the surface of the hands, face, arms, and legs. In school children, common warts can be a source of embarrassment because they effect the appearance.
Flat WartsFlat warts are skin-colored and only slightly raised above the skin surface. Flat warts are much smaller but grow in larger numbers and are usually seen on the face and legs.
Plantar WartsPlantar warts are a painful inward growing wart usually found on the bottom of the foot or toes. The pressure of walking flattens them, pushing the wart into the skin. Plantar warts are often difficult to treat because most of the wart is below the skin surface. These warts disappear own their own faster then other warts.
Warts are the reason for approximately 20% of all visits to the Pediatrician for skin problems. Wart treatment remains frustrating. Most treatments take a long time to work, some are not effective and others are painful. Even when the wart treatment seems to work and the wart is removed, there is no guarantee that warts will not return. Here are some helpful articles for wart removal and various all-natural wart treatments.
